King Charles III and Queen Camilla will visit Canada for two days. Their visit shows support for Canada amid threats and taunts from US President Donald Trump.
Prime Minister Mark Carney, who won an election with strong anti-Trump feelings, invited the royal couple. They will meet in Ottawa.
The King will read the "Speech from the Throne" to Canada’s Parliament on Tuesday. This is the first time in nearly 50 years that a monarch has done this.
The speech will likely defend Canada’s independence and reject US claims to take over the country.
On Monday, the King and Queen will have a ceremonial welcome at the Ottawa airport. They will also meet groups, including Canada’s First Nations communities.
The King will meet Canada’s first indigenous Governor General, Mary Simon.
This is the first visit by King Charles and Queen Camilla since they became monarchs. A trip planned last year was canceled because the King was sick with cancer.
Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles’s mother, read the Speech from the Throne twice during her reign in 1957 and 1977.
The visit sends a strong message of support for Canada after Trump suggested Canada should become the 51st US state.
This US threat has made Canadians more proud of their country. Many places in Ottawa now show “Proudly Canadian” signs.
Carney told Trump in Washington that Canada is "not for sale." The King’s speech will carry this message too. The speech is written by the Canadian government.
Jeremy Kinsman, a former Canadian diplomat, said the King will be happy to say this. He expects the speech to strongly support Canada’s sovereignty.
The speech will be in both French and English. It will outline the Canadian government’s plans, similar to the King’s Speech in the UK Parliament.
The speech will also stress that Canada is an independent country. Canada is part of the Commonwealth and NATO.
Before the visit, Carney said, "This is a great honor that fits our times."
The King will wear a suit, and the event will be simple. It will not be as fancy as the UK Parliament opening, where the King wears a crown and robes.
Besides the speech, the King and Queen will join community events and meet local leaders.
This visit is a careful diplomatic move. The King is head of state for both Canada and the UK. In the UK role, he works to keep good ties with the US and recently invited Trump for another state visit.
But in Canada, the King must show a different message, supporting Canada’s rejection of Trump’s plans.
A royal source said the King is skilled at this kind of diplomacy. He is respected worldwide and has good relations with many leaders.
This visit is important for Canada and shows the King’s special role.
