Trump Tariffs Stay in Place During Court Fight

A court has allowed President Trump to keep his import taxes in place for now, even though another court said the tariffs were illegal. The appeals court paused the lower court's order, which said Trump had gone too far.

The White House said judges should not interfere with trade decisions. Some states and small businesses are fighting the tariffs. They say only Congress should make trade and tax rules.

In February, Trump added tariffs on goods from China, Mexico, and Canada. He said it was to fight the fentanyl crisis. Then in April, he added a 10% tax on goods from many countries. Some countries, like China and those in the EU, got even higher tariffs.

The trade court said Trump used a law meant for emergencies to set tariffs. This law is not usually used for trade policy. But that ruling does not affect older tariffs on steel, cars, and other items.

Trump’s team says they will find another way to keep tariffs, even if they lose in court. The next court hearing is on June 5.

Business owners are unsure what will happen. Kara Dyer, who sells toys made in China, said the rules keep changing and it’s hard to plan.

Experts say this case may stop Trump from using sudden tariffs as a way to pressure other countries in future talks.
