Trump Plans 50% Tariff on EU Goods, Warns Apple About iPhones Made Outside the US
US President Donald Trump said he wants to put a 50% tax on goods from the European Union. He said this on social media on Friday.
“Our talks with them are not working!” he wrote. He said the new tax will start on June 1, 2025.
This is a big step in Trump's trade fight with the EU. At first, he wanted a 20% tax. Then he lowered it to 10% to give time for more talks. But now, he is pushing for a higher tax.
Trump also warned Apple. He said he might put a 25% tax on iPhones that are not made in the US.
“I told Tim Cook of Apple that I want iPhones sold in the US to be made in the US. Not in India or anywhere else,” Trump said. “If not, Apple must pay a 25% tax.”
Since returning as president, Trump has made or threatened new taxes on many countries. He says this helps US factories and jobs.
A tariff is a tax on goods coming into a country. The company that brings in the goods pays the tax.
Many world leaders are worried about this. Selling things in the US may now cost more and be harder.
On Friday, Trump said the EU was “very hard to deal with.”
“Our talks are going nowhere,” he said. “So I am asking for a 50% tax on EU goods, starting June 1.”
Trump added there will be no tax if the goods are made in the US.
He also repeated his message to Apple. Apple is moving its iPhone production from China to India. Other products, like iPads and Apple Watches, will be made in Vietnam.
But Trump said again, “I want iPhones for the US to be made in the US. If not, a 25% tax will be charged.”
