21 Dead and Many Hurt at Gaza Aid Center, Says Red Cross

At least 21 people died and many more were hurt at an aid center in southern Gaza, said the Red Cross. Most people had gunshot or shrapnel wounds. Women and children were among the 179 injured.

The Red Cross said this was the largest number of wounded people they’ve seen in one incident since opening their hospital in Rafah.

Hamas blamed Israeli gunfire. But the Israeli army (IDF) said they did not shoot at anyone near the aid site. The IDF also shared drone video showing armed men near crowds in a different area. The BBC has not confirmed if this video is real.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which runs the aid center, said no attack happened at their site. They said Hamas made it up.

Doctors at Nasser Hospital said about 200 people came in with wounds from bullets or shrapnel. Local videos showed people being carried in carts and trucks to the hospital.

The Gaza health ministry said 31 people were killed and more than 200 were hurt. A British doctor in Gaza said most patients had been shot.

Another 14 people were injured in a different area, said the Palestinian Red Crescent.

A local journalist told the BBC that people were near the aid site when Israeli tanks arrived and started shooting. He said no one could get help for a long time. People used donkey carts to bring the wounded to the hospital.

The Gaza Civil Defence said over 100 people were hurt by Israeli gunfire.

The situation in Rafah is very bad. Aid is hard to get because of the fighting. Crowds rushed aid trucks on Saturday due to hunger.

The GHF is backed by the US and Israel. It was set up to give out food in Gaza. Israel says Hamas takes aid, but Hamas denies this.

The war started after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Since then, over 54,000 people have died in Gaza, according to health officials there.
