US President Donald Trump says China broke a trade deal made earlier this month. China says the US is also not following the deal.
The two countries agreed in Geneva to lower tariffs on each other’s goods. But now both sides are making strong claims again.
Trump wrote online that China “totally violated” the deal. He said China did not remove extra trade rules, as promised.
US trade official Jamieson Greer said China was slow to remove other restrictions. He said China still limits rare earth exports and blocks some US companies.
Greer said the US did what it promised but China has been slow to act. He called it “unacceptable.”
China replied by asking the US to stop unfair rules and respect the deal. China also said it had warned the US about blocking tech sales and student visas.
Talks between the two countries now seem stuck. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said leaders may need to speak directly.
Earlier this month, both sides agreed to cut tariffs. The US dropped its tariffs from 145% to 30%, and China cut its tariffs from 125% to 10%.
Trump’s use of tariffs faces legal trouble. A court said he went too far. But the White House is appealing the ruling.
Talks with other countries, like Japan, are still going on. Some trade deals may be close, but others need more time.
