Nike will raise prices on some shoes and clothes in the US starting in early June. This comes weeks after Adidas said it would also raise prices because of tariffs.
Nike did not say tariffs were the reason. Instead, it said price changes are part of its regular planning.
Most Nike items are made in Asia. The US has put tariffs on many goods from this region. A base tariff of 10% is still in place. Higher tariffs may start again in July.
Tariffs are taxes on imports. The company that brings the goods into the US usually pays this tax. Many companies pass this cost on to shoppers.
President Trump said companies should not blame tariffs for price increases. He said big firms like Walmart make enough money to cover the cost themselves.
Nike said in a statement: "We regularly check our prices and make changes with each new season."
In March, Nike’s finance chief Matt Friend said the company is facing many challenges, including tariffs. He said they are also watching how these issues affect customers.
From June 1, most Nike shoes that cost more than $100 will go up in price by up to $10. Clothes and gear will cost $2 to $10 more.
Some items, like the Air Force 1 shoes and kids' products, will not go up in price. Jordan-brand gear is also not included in the price hike.
In April, Adidas said Trump’s tariffs would make popular shoes like the Gazelle and Samba more expensive in the US.
UK retailer JD Sports said higher US prices could lead to fewer sales.
Many companies are unsure what to expect from US trade policies. Some of the highest new tariffs could hit goods from Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and China. These countries make many of the shoes sold in the US. These tariffs could range from 32% to 54%.
The US has paused these tariffs for 90 days, but the 10% tariff still applies. Vietnam makes the most Nike goods. Half of Nike’s shoes and over a quarter of its clothes come from there.
Nike also works with factories in China, Indonesia, and Cambodia.
Vietnam is a key place for making goods. Trump has put one of the highest tariffs—46%—on items from there.
This week, Trump’s son Eric is visiting Vietnam. The Trump Organization and a local company plan to invest $1.5 billion in hotels and real estate there. They are also looking to build a Trump Tower in Ho Chi Minh City.
Nike will start selling its products on Amazon again in the US. It last sold items there in 2019. The company had stopped to focus on its website and stores.
Nike’s online sales have fallen. From December to February, sales dropped in all regions. Europe, the Middle East, and Africa saw the biggest drop at 25%. In China, sales fell 20%.
Nike’s total income is also falling. Last year, it brought back Elliott Hill, a former leader, to run the company. He is now trying to turn the business around. The new focus will be on the UK, US, and China.
