King Charles Opens Canadian Parliament with Message of Unity and Sovereignty

King Charles gave a big speech in Canada to open Parliament. This was the first time in almost 50 years a king or queen has done this. His speech talked about Canada’s role in a changing world and its close ties with the US.

1. A Clear Message to the US

Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, invited the King to send a message. US President Donald Trump has made comments that some say hurt Canada’s image as an independent country.

The King didn’t name Trump, but he spoke about Canada’s strength. He said it was good to see Canadians full of pride, unity, and hope. He praised Canada as bold and creative.

He also said the Crown is a symbol of Canada’s past and future. The speech ended with a line from the anthem: “The True North is strong and free!”

Letting the King speak, instead of the Governor General, was a big gesture. It showed strong support for Canada.

2. Canada in a Changing World

The King said the world faces many problems. Countries are not as sure of their place anymore.

He said trade is changing. Canada’s deals with other countries are also changing. He said it is time to build stronger ties, especially with Europe.

Prime Minister Carney said during the election that this is a big moment for Canada. The King agreed. He said Canada can now make big changes—just like after World War II.

3. Plans to Grow the Economy

The speech shared the government’s plans to boost the economy.

  • Big projects will move faster.

  • A loan program for Indigenous groups will grow.

  • By July 1, a new law will help remove trade rules between provinces. These rules cost Canada about C$200 billion each year.

4. Fixing Housing, Costs, and Crime

Housing is very expensive in Canada. The government wants to build 500,000 homes each year.

It will:

  • Use cheaper building methods like modular homes.

  • Cut fees for multi-unit housing.

  • Remove tax for first-time home buyers on houses under C$1 million.

To lower costs, there will also be a tax cut for middle-income earners.

Crime was another big topic. The government plans to bring in tougher rules for car theft, break-ins, drug crimes, and human trafficking.

5. More Spending on Defence and Borders

The US and NATO want Canada to spend more on its military. Carney said Canada will reach the target (2% of its economy) by 2030.

The speech said Canada will:

  • Rebuild and improve its armed forces.

  • Join a European plan to raise defence spending.

  • Be more active in the Arctic.

  • Talk with the US about joining a new missile defence system called the “Golden Dome.”
