King James I’s Gloves and Historic Fashion Items Displayed Across France and the UK

A pair of embroidered gloves that belonged to King James I is going on show in France and the UK.

The Fashion Museum Bath has many fashion items. They include an old court dress made when Haute Couture began. The items are from the 16th century to today.

The museum is fixing its building now. So, its clothes are being shown in big exhibits in Paris, London, and Edinburgh.

Elisabeth Murray, the museum's senior curator, said, "Each item tells a special story. It is fun to share them with some of this year's top exhibits."

More than 1.2 million people saw the museum’s items in 2024.

Ms. Murray said, "Our loan program lets people see and enjoy our amazing collection."

Some items on show are:

  • Brown leather gloves once owned by King James I.

  • A colorful women's waistcoat from the 1600s at the National Galleries of Scotland: Portrait Gallery.

  • Two dresses made by the House of Worth for Mary Curzon and Empress Eugenie in Paris.

  • A hat worn by photographer Sir Cecil Beaton and a silk dress worn by actress Wendy Hiller in London.

  • Other pieces are shown in Surrey and Dorset during the summer.

Councillor Paul Roper said the collection is "a great time capsule of fashion history and a real treasure for the city."

He added, "As we plan a new home for the museum, it’s exciting that the collection inspires others through loans.

"Working with big cultural groups puts Bath on the fashion map."
