The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an aid group backed by the U.S. and Israel, started distributing food in Gaza on Monday. They said they delivered food to secure sites in Gaza and began giving out aid. More trucks will bring more aid each day. The GHF plans to distribute 300 million meals in the first 90 days.
The group is led by former government and military officials. The aid is protected by private security firms, and GHF says it will reach one million Palestinians by the end of the week. The U.N. and other aid groups have criticized GHF’s actions, saying it does not follow humanitarian principles and could be used for political purposes.
GHF’s director, Jake Wood, resigned because he believed the group could not follow humanitarian standards. The group now has an interim leader, John Acree.
Hamas has warned people not to cooperate with the GHF, calling it part of a plan to force Palestinians to leave Gaza. Some people have criticized the distribution plan, saying it could force people to move under dangerous conditions and may leave some out.
The U.N. said the aid effort is a “distraction” from what Gaza really needs, like reopening aid crossings and getting more supplies into Gaza. Despite this, Israel continues to allow small amounts of aid into Gaza after a long blockade.
Since the start of the Israeli military operation, over 54,000 Palestinians have died, and aid groups are warning of famine.
