Gary Lineker said an emotional goodbye on his last episode of Match of the Day, ending 26 years of hosting. Lineker, who announced in November that he would leave after the Premier League season, departed earlier than planned after apologizing for sharing an antisemitic social media post.
In his farewell, Lineker acknowledged the controversy, saying, "It wasn't meant to end this way." He also joked about his final show, referring to the last day of the season and expressing gratitude to viewers. Afterward, his colleagues Alan Shearer and Micah Richards presented him with a commemorative cap and a golden boot. He thanked viewers, saying, “Thank you for all your love and support over the years.”
Lineker replaced Des Lynam as host of Match of the Day in 1999 and became the BBC's highest-paid presenter. He gained attention for his opinions beyond football, especially on social media. In 2023, he was suspended for a tweet about the government's asylum policy, but was later reinstated. This year, he was criticized for sharing a post about Zionism that included a rat image, a symbol often used in antisemitic portrayals. Lineker apologized, saying he didn't notice the image and would never post anything antisemitic.
Lineker's departure was confirmed after this incident. He expressed regret for causing offense and said stepping back was the right thing to do. BBC director general Tim Davie praised Lineker as a "defining voice" in football coverage.
In his final episode, Lineker spoke with Liverpool's manager Arne Slot and reflected on his time at the BBC. A montage showed highlights of his career, including the time he presented in Leicester City boxer shorts after his team won the Premier League in 2016. Lineker's friends and colleagues, including Ian Wright, Alan Shearer, and Pep Guardiola, paid tribute.
Next season, Match of the Day will be hosted by Gabby Logan, Mark Chapman, and Kelly Cates. Lineker wished them well, saying the show was in good hands.
