A touching yearly run to remember the Liverpool fans who died in the Hillsborough disaster will happen soon.
The BTR Run For The 97 5K began 10 years ago. It was made to create a positive community memory for those who died in 1989, their families, survivors, and supporters of the Hillsborough cause. The run starts and ends in Liverpool’s Stanley Park.
The group BTR said the event has raised over £45,000 for charity since it started in 2015. The run includes fans of both Liverpool and Everton. It goes past both teams’ stadiums.
Ninety-seven fans died in a crush at a football match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on April 15, 1989.
BTR said the 5K fun run and a one-mile community run have had great support. More than 1,500 runners joined, with 150 people from as far as Australia running online.
The 5K course will pass the eternal flame memorial at Anfield. Many runners will stop there to show respect and remember. The run also goes past Goodison Park. Everton’s women’s team will play there after the men move to a new 53,000-seat stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.
This 11th yearly event raises money for Jamie Carragher’s 23 Foundation, the LFC Foundation, and the Stanley Park junior park run.
Alan Rothwell, the BTR Liverpool race director, said the run "feels more moving each year." He said it shows "community, legacy, hope, kindness, and true strength."
He said anyone can join, even if they don’t run fast.
“The event is for all. It’s not a race. It’s lovely to see people walk, jog, or run just to be part of this community memory.”
