On May 25, 2025, Rafael Nadal said goodbye to tennis during a special ceremony at the French Open in Paris. He was joined by his old rivals, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. Nadal retired in November 2024 after a career full of wins, and the ceremony honored his 14 titles at Roland Garros.
The event took place on Court Philippe-Chatrier, the same court where Nadal played many of his most famous matches. The crowd was excited to see him, with many wearing T-shirts that read "Merci Rafa" and "14 RG" to honor his achievements.
Nadal shared stories from his career. He recalled his first visit to Roland Garros in 2004, when he was injured and on crutches, hoping to return the next year. He did, and he won his first French Open title at just 19 years old. He went on to win 13 more, creating one of the most incredible tennis records ever.
Nadal got emotional as he thanked his family, coaches, and the French fans. He especially thanked his uncle Toni, who had coached him from a young age. "You are the reason why I am here," Nadal said with tears in his eyes.
The highlight of the ceremony came when Federer, Djokovic, and Murray joined Nadal on the court. The four players, who had fierce rivalries over the years, embraced each other. "We built amazing rivalries, but we were also good colleagues and respected one another," Nadal said.
Nadal also shared a funny story about his friendship with Murray. After a match where Murray's team lost, he texted Nadal to check on him, using his typical British humor.
At the end of the ceremony, Nadal was presented with a special plaque on the court. It had his footprint and name on it, ensuring that he will always be remembered at Roland Garros. Nadal left the court with his son, a symbol of the next generation of tennis players.
The ceremony was a fitting farewell to one of the greatest players in tennis history.
